Escalating Migrant and Human Rights Issues and the Importance of Larkin & Lacey Frontera Fund

The year 2016, was significant in terms of migrant issues around the world. There were genocide, the exodus of people for life and shelter, and migration for livable conditions, and that were one of the top discussion points last year. The same is being continued this year as well, and the issues are at times creating conflicts between different ethnic groups and races.

In a way, a majority of migrants’ issues are translating as human rights issues as humans are being tortured and suffered in the transition. Per the recent reports, at least 244 million people are living outside of their home country, and they are experiencing the various range of exploitation by the greedy minded and influential individuals in the host country. Sadly, some groups wanted to make the migrant issues continued to exploit those helpless souls.

Until the recent years, migrant issues were not widespread and considered to be peculiar to few regions around the world. Nowadays, it has changed, and most of the developed countries are facing escalated tension between migrants and local people. Though most of the people take things lightly, few considers it as sensitive, and ebullient politicians and pressure groups work on it to make their profit out of it. There are non-profit organizations and human rights groups working vociferously to control the situation and to assist the immigrants on their issues. These organizations and groups are working closely with immigrants and locals and educate each other the need for coexistence, raising funds to help the immigrants, actively campaigns for the immigrants’ rights, etc.

The mainstream media is also playing a significant role in raising various immigrant issues and addressing it on the larger platforms. There are a number of migrant organizations with the reputation of dedicated services such as United Nations Human Rights, International Organization for Migration, Global Migration Group, etc.

There are initiatives which started by individuals are also working significantly on migrant issues. One such initiative is Larkin & Lacey Frontera Fund, a fund set up by the renowned journalists named Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey, who are also the founders of Village Voice Media and a newspaper called Phoenix New Times.

The duo dedicated the settlement amount they received for the illegal arrest by the Sheriff Joe Arpaio, to help the migrant rights organizations in Arizona. It was on October 18, 2007, both the journalists arrested from their home at mid-night for publishing the grand jury proceedings that usually ask for news articles and reporter’s notes featuring the Sherriff.

Moreover, the jury asked the details of the online readers of news related to Sherriff and even demanded their personal data. Since Lacey and Larkin were fighting for various human rights and migrant rights issues throughout their lifetime, they decided to challenge unjustifiable act at the United States Court of Appeals.

The duo sued the county and won it with a huge settlement amount of $3.75 million. The Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund is not only for migrant issues but also for various civil and human rights issues as well and promotes freedom of speech and encourages protests in the Mexican border.
