Ira Kirschenbaum is an Orthopaedic Surgeon who attended the Albert Einstein College of Medicine to receive his Doctor of Medicine degree and subsequently attended Harvard University for his executive education in healthcare. He has served as the Chairman of Orthopaedics at BronxCare Health System for the past 10 years where he is responsible for developing a comprehensive Orthopaedic department.
Ira Kirschenbaum shares insight into alternative knee replacements through examples of his own patients that has been transformed into video presentations. One of these patients is named Robert Reed, who has participated in various sports for the past 25 years. Reed began developing arthritis in both knees; causing an intense amount of pain, throbbing, and immobility. This motivated Reed to consult Dr. Ira Kirschenbaum for suggestions in how to alleviate these pains – and learn the various treatments that can be performed.
Many patients in the past have undergone total knee replacement that has caused them future harm through its invasion of healthy tissue – as well as the possibility for the new knee to fail and then be completely replaced again. Ira Kirschenbaum’s methods include the treatment of separate compartments, which results in the resurfacing of one area with a combination of metal and high-density plastic.
The result of this operation is a reduced amount of trauma to the patient, and the protection of healthy tissue. Ira Kirschenbaum suggests patients with arthritis on a single joint should inquire about this alternative source of knee replacement – and believes that in the population of those suffering from arthritic knees – approximately 70% of them would benefit from a partial knee resurfacing.
